The EBRD came into being in 1991, following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Our aim was to help the former communist states become open, democratic market economies.

Over two decades later, we’re the largest financial investor in a region that stretches from central Europe to central Asia and encompasses the southern and eastern Mediterranean. Owned by 63 countries, the European Union and the European Investment Bank, we invest primarily in private sector clients whose needs cannot be fully met by the market. Each one of our projects is assigned a team of specialists attuned to the demands of the client, country, region and sector in question.

Our work goes far beyond financing individual projects and clients. The investments we make affect a diverse range of people across a wide variety of cultures with the ultimate goal of making their lives better.
