The Environmental Justice Foundation

JobEJF is seeking a campaigner who is passionate about protecting the marine environment

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is a UK-based non-governmental organisation working to secure a world where natural habitats and environments can sustain, and be sustained by, the communities that depend upon them for their basic needs and livelihoods. EJF is dynamic, agile and effective, and the team works across nine countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

EJF is working to eradicate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and associated issues, such as human rights abuses. To do this, we work with governments and industry to promote transparency and traceability within seafood supply chains and markets. We conduct detailed investigations into illegal, unsustainable and unethical practices and actively promote improvements to policy-making, corporate governance and the management of fisheries along with raising awareness among consumers to incentivize market-driven solutions.

Japan is one of the largest and most important seafood markets in the world. We are seeking a campaigner based in Tokyo who is passionate about protecting the marine environment and the livelihoods and other human rights of those who depend upon it. The successful candidate will be an experienced, determined and motivated person who has an understanding of advocacy, fisheries governance or other relevant fields. You are expected to be able to work independently and with international colleagues to conduct research, develop strategies and represent EJF to relevant organisations.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Research and analysis to identify seafood tainted with IUU and human rights abuses in Japanese supply chains;
  • Liaise with internal and external partners, stakeholders and decision-makers to develop and implement a detailed advocacy plan in Japan, including representing EJF in high-level meetings and events;
  • Raise the awareness and understanding among Japanese industry, media and other key stakeholders about the problems of IUU fishing and human rights abuses in the seafood industry;
  • Work in collaboration with partner groups to progress campaign objectives; and
  • Develop EJF materials in Japanese and vice versa.

 Requirements

  • At least three years professional experience in environmental policy, oceans issues, human rights, government and/or other relevant fields;
  • Demonstrable professional experience in research, public affairs or communications;
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritise tasks; and
  • Professional level fluency in English and Japanese.
