Connecting people through words
1.) Could you tell us about your current responsibilities?Well, I belong to the localization team, which is a sub-section of our overseas department. I'm mainly responsible for translating and editing—written stuff—but I also direct voice actors during English recordings, so my job involves vocalized stuff too. Sometimes I also help out whenever we attend overseas conventions, doing things like interpreting, working at our company booth, or hosting panel discussions. As you can see, a localizer has to wear a lot of hats, but it all comes back to working with language in its various forms.
2.) What do you find rewarding about your job?
I feel the most "sparkle" whenever my words bring people together. For example, the US has a lot of Japanese game fans, but without the process of localization, it's hard for those fans to access the content they crave. We translate so players from around the world can enjoy these unique game experiences—that's what makes this job fulfilling.
It's very organized! Within our overseas department, we have special subsections for each global region. They wrangle all the overseas publishing and marketing for us, which makes our lives as localizers a lot easier. Also, perhaps on a more personal note, I'm the type of person who gets bored easily, so I enjoy the excitement and stimulation of working on multiple game projects. No two days are the same!
Bringing Cygames to the English-speaking world
1.) Could you tell us about your current responsibilities?I manage the Global Operations Division, which means I keep track of regional promotion planning and budgeting in addition to coordinating our team's schedule. Sometimes it's a delicate balance.The Global Operations Division itself is responsible for promotion in the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Though Cygames has an Asian Division, we take care of any Asian countries where English is a widely spoken language. From managing eSports tournaments and producing booths at conventions, to selling merchandise and broadcasting promotional material, our section handles a large variety of tasks.It continues to be my pleasure leading a multi-talented team who do their best to bring Cygames's titles to not only our faithful fans, but to new audiences everywhere.
2.) What do you find rewarding about your job?
For me, I feel a special energy whenever I see our fans smile with delight at our overseas events, or when our players step out into the limelight at our eSports tournaments. Since we plan everything from Japan, which is always far away from our event sites, it's really rewarding to see all our hard work resonate with our fans.
That being said, considering the global situation with Covid-19, we've since paused going to live events in favor of putting more effort into online tournaments and community support. Although our recent activities aren't as large scale as in the past, the continued positive feedback from our players provides us with the motivation to deliver better and more entertaining products.
We place equal importance on both experience and potential, allowing our staff to take on new challenges even if they've never done that type of work before. Take me, for example. My previous job had nothing to do with the games industry, but I found a welcoming environment in Cygames, where I was allowed to pursue the tasks I wanted to do. Simply put, it's a very active place where enthusiasm thrives.
Oh, I also like the emphasis on providing a nice working environment. In addition to the excellent facilities, we have a company newsletter and posters for staff, which strike me as thoughtful details. Altogether, it naturally makes you want to "produce the ultimate content!"
