Strategy/ProductsOmniVision's High Dynamic Range (HDR) camera sensors

Human vision, one of the five senses that many of us often take for granted is amazingly complex and efficient.

The sights that our eyes take in each day are made up of some 50,000 tones and colors that we are able to accurately map and decode instantaneously.

With the increasing impact of imaging technology on the automotive market, manufacturers are challenged with developing image sensors that ultimately are capable of performing in similar fashion to a human eye.

That means being able to recognize and map these tonal and color ranges in all light conditions and to rapidly adjust and capture them into a single image. Image sensors that offer this advanced technology are known as wide dynamic range or more commonly high dynamic range or HDR sensors.

Continuing to pioneer innovation, OmniVision technologies now offers the imaging industry's first single chip color HDR CMOS image sensor for the automotive market, the OV10620.

Using OmniVision’s proprietary color HDR technology, the OV10620 has the ability to deliver some unique benefits across a multitude of advanced machine vision applications in the automotive market where preserving the wide tonal range of colors in extreme contrasting conditions can prove to be a critical asset.

Typical automotive machine vision applications include collision detection and preparation, rain detection, traffic sign recognition, intelligent headlight dimming, and lane departure warning and guidance systems.

OmniVision’s HDR sensors incorporate a unique split pixel design that operates using different exposure times to allow part of the pixel to capture dark tones within an image and the other part to capture bright tones.

The two images are then merged using proprietary signal processing pipeline technology to yield the HDR image.

The OV10620 digital sensor comes in a 1/3 inch wide VGA and a 1/4 inch VGA image array, operating at 30 frames per second at full resolution.

It offers the flexibility of YUV or RGB raw output and is capable of performing at a dynamic range of up to 100 dB for color and 110 dB for black and white.

OmniVision’s OV10620 delivers the right solutions for the fast-changing demands of the automotive imaging market. As the first single chip cost-efficient color HDR solution, it utilizes a unique split pixel design.

It provides automatic adaptation for low and high contrast scenes with fast response algorithms, and offers unmatched overall quality.

OmniVision HDR, providing dynamic vision for the road ahead.
