馴染みのない場所へ訪問するのは気が重いですよね。新しい職場なら尚更のこと。誰か案内をしてくれる人がいたら助かりますよね。今週のブログでは社内での案内を、新しく来た人にどうやって上手にするかについてお話します。

 

Visiting an unfamiliar location can be daunting and especially so if it is a new office, so it is always a great thing if someone offers to help show us around. In this week’s blog, I would like to talk about how we can help newcomers by giving directions around the office.

 

最初に、案内することを申し出ましょう。

 

First we should offer to show someone around:

 

Let me show you around. 社内を案内しますよ。

I’ll give you a quick tour of the office. 社内の簡単なツアーをしますね。

 

そして、社内の配置を簡単に説明し始めます。

 

Then we can start by giving a quick explanation of the office layout:

 

Your desk is (down the hallway, to the right). あなたの机は（この通路を進んで右側）です。

The manager’s office is (behind your desk). マネージャーのオフィスは（あなたの机の向こう側）です。

If you need to use the bathroom, it is (through the door next to Sarah’s desk). お手洗いは（このドアの向こうのSarahの机の横）です。

 

特定の場所を尋ねられることもあるでしょう。

 

Sometimes we might be asked where specific things are:

 

 

Would you mind telling me where the (photocopier) is? 良かったら（コピー機）の場所を教えてもらえませんか？

How do I get to (Procurement)? どうやって（調達部）まで行けば良いですか？

 

施設内の特定の場所への詳しい行き方を、命令形（現在形の動詞を文章の頭に置く形）を使って明確に説明をすることができます。

 

We can give detailed directions about how to get to certain places in the building using the imperative form (sentences that begin with a present simple verb) to give clear instructions:

 

Take the elevator / escalator / stairs to the (30th) floor. エレベーター/ エスカレーター/ 階段を使って（３０階）まで行って

*Head upstairs / downstairs to the (5th) floor. 上の階 / 下の階の（５階）に行って

Go down the hallway. 廊下をそのまま進んで

Take a right / left past (room 19). （１９番の部屋）を過ぎたら右 / 左に曲がって

Turn the corner at (R&D). （R&D）の角を曲がって

 

*ここの「Head」は「Go」を言い換えたものです。

*‘Head’ is another way to say ‘go’.

 

「and」（そして）をなどの接続詞を一緒に使って説明文をつなげることを忘れないでください。同じように「then」（それから/その時）「after that」（その後で）などのフレーズを使って構文の順序を並べましょう。例「エスカレーターを使って５階に行き、そして通路に進み、それからオフィス用品室を右に曲がって」

 

Don’t forget to link your directions together using conjunctions such as ‘and’, as well as sequencing the stages using phrases such as ‘then’ and ‘after that’; e.g. ‘Take the escalator to the 5th floor and head down the hallway. Then, turn right at the stationary room’. 

 

そして目的地を追加することができます。

 

We can then add the final location:

 

It’s next to the (filing cabinets). （ファイルの棚）の横にあります。

It’s on the left / right hand side. それは左/右手にあります。

It’s should be right in front of you. それはあなたの目の前にあるはずです。

 

通常、その場所を見つけることの容易さを伝えることで、案内を終えます。

 

Usually we finish off by stating the ease of finding the location:

 

You can’t miss it. 見逃すことはないですよ。

It’s really easy to find. すごく簡単に 見つかりますよ。

 

注意を追加することもできます。

 

We can also add in reminders:

 

You will need to (swipe your security card) to get in. そこに入るには（セキュリティカードをスワイプする）必要があります。

Don’t forget to (sign in/ sign out) when you (enter / leave). （入る・出る）時に（サインイン/サインアウト）を忘れないでください。

 

行き方を教え終わったら、この先も手助けする旨を丁寧に伝えましょう。

 

When we complete the process of giving directions, it’s always polite to leave the offer of help open for the future:

 

My door is always open so feel free to ask any questions. 私のオフィスのドアはいつでも開けてあるから、どんな質問でも気軽に質問してくださいね。

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. 他にも何か質問があったら、気軽に聞いてきてくださいね。

 

では、社内での案内をする設定の例を見てみましょう。Helenはウェブデザイン事務所のARKソリューションに就職し、これが彼女の初日です。彼女の上司John が社内を案内することを申し出るところから始まります。

 

Now let’s look at an example situation for giving directions in the office. Helen Schwartz has just been employed at ARK Solutions, a web design agency, and it is her first day. Her supervisor, John Caine, offers to show her around the office:

 

John: Let me show you around.

John：社内を案内しますよ。

 

Helen: Thanks.

Helen：ありがとうございます。

 

John: Your desk is down the hallway to the left, next to Dana Murray’s desk in room 12.

John：この通路の先の左側、１２番の部屋のDanaの隣があなたの机です。

 

Helen: Got it.

Helen：わかりました。

 

John: My desk is just next to yours on the right hand side.

John：あなたの机のちょうど右側が私の机です。

 

Helen: Okay.

Helen：はい。

 

John: If you need to use the bathroom, head upstairs to the 3rd floor and go down the hallway. It’s on the right hand side.

John：トイレは上の階の３階に行って、通路の先の右側にあります。

 

Helen: Thanks. Would you mind telling me where the cafeteria is? 

Helen：ありがとうございます。もし良ければ食堂の場所を教えて頂けませんか？

 

John: Sure. Take the elevator to the 16th floor. Go down the hallway past the vending machines and take a right at the security gate. You will need to swipe your security card to get in. The cafeteria should be right in front of you. You can’t miss it.

John：もちろん。エレベーターを使って１６階へ行って、通路を進んで自動販売機を通り過ぎたら、セキュリティの入り口を右に曲がります。中に入るには、あなたのセキュリティーカードをスワイプする必要があります。食堂は目の前にあるはずなので、見逃しませんよ。

 

Helen: That’s great. Thank you.

Helen:　良くわかりました。ありがとうございます。

 

これらのフレーズを使って練習して、英語を話す同僚にあなたの会社や、周辺の案内もしてあげてください。
