In business English, it is often important to look at both the positive and negative sides of a situation in order to get a clearer idea of the bigger picture. If we focus too much on the positive or negative aspects of an argument, misunderstandings might occur and tensions could arise so in order to achieve a balanced argument, we need to be selective in our choice of words and phrases.

To supplement my previous blog on how to give your opinion strongly and how to make a suggestion, I’d like to look at how to balance an argument correctly below:

On the one hand … , On the other, …

On the one hand, I think the new policy is a good idea. On the other, I think it may incur extra costs.

On one side of the coin, … On the other, …
On one side of the coin, if we launch this project in Vietnam, it will create new opportunities for us in Asia. On the other side of the coin, this may have a negative impact on long term domestic clients.
If you consider + [名詞/動名詞], … However if you also think about + [名詞/動名詞], …
If you consider our target market, we should really change the package design to make it easier to identify on the shelf. However, if you also think about the customer’s association with the current design, it might be a good idea to keep it the same.
From a + [名詞/動名詞/形容詞] + perspective …,
From a cost perspective, what you are suggesting might work, but from a time perspective, it might take too long.
If we consider the advantages, … However, if we think about the disadvantages, …
If we consider the advantages of using sports stars to endorse our products, it might be possible to boost brand awareness in the U.S.. However, if we think about the disadvantages, it might not be cost effective to hire them.

違う側面について話す場合、私たちがよく使うフレーズは「on the one hand, … on the other, ...」

Generally speaking, we use balanced phrases that have two parts, such as ‘on the one hand, … on the other, …, as well as using ‘point of view’ to approach an issue from different angles. We can use these phrases altogether in one long discourse (see example A below), or we can use them in different sentences as a way to counterbalance another person’s opinion (see example B below).

Responding in a diplomatic or balanced way is also important when you are discussing something that you feel differently about. The most important thing is to always be polite and keep your voice calm when using the phrases below:

That’s a great point, but have you considered …
That’s a great point, but have you considered the effect on growth?
I see where you are coming from, but I think …
I see where you are coming from, but I think the cons far outweigh the pros.
That may be so, but if we also think about …
That may be so, but if we think about the time it will take, it’s not time effective.
Have you also thought about …?
Have you also thought about how much that will cost?
That may be the case, but …
That may be the case, but I think we might need some time to think about it.

Let’s look at some of these phrases in action:

Scenario A:

Harry: So, on the one hand I think profits will rise if we invest in upcoming markets in South America, but on the other hand, we might lose our domestic market share.

Mark: I see where you are coming from, but I think we should focus on our international presence if we want to grow our business.

Scenario B:

Satoko: I think that, from a time perspective, we might need to extend staff working hours to include ten hours of overtime a week to complete the project.

Asami: Can I just interrupt? Have you also thought about offering an incentive to staff?

Satoko: Yes, if you consider the benefit to staff, we could offer a bonus based on a performance review.

In my next blog, I will be talking about how to negotiate effectively in business.
