あなたはアメリカ人を相手に重要なミーティングに臨んでいます。おっと、彼らがあなたの意見を求めてきました。困りましたね。あなたは人前で発言することに慣れていませんし、一人だけ周りと違う意見だったら…と不安です。相手の気を悪くしないようにするには？自分の意見を受け入れてもらうには？ああ、頭が痛くなります！

実際、ミーティングでは参加者に意見や提案を求められることが多々あります。そんなの難しすぎる、と思われる方も少なくありません。異文化間だと特に、相手の慣習やミーティングのスタイルの違いによって衝突してしまうかもしれないと心配なのですね。ですが西洋式のミーティングにおいてあなたの考えを尊重してもらうには、ただ意見を述べるだけでなく、それを効果的に伝えるすべを知っておく必要があります。

 

You are in an important meeting with your American counterparts and you are asked to give your opinion on the current issue, however you are not used to speaking out in front of others or may be afraid to appear in disagreement with the common consensus. What should you do? How can you avoid offending others? Will your opinion be accepted? It’s a very familiar situation and can be very nerve-wracking indeed!

In the modern meeting it is common for participants to be asked to express their opinion on various issues or to make suggestions. For many people this may seem an insurmountable task as it may conflict with their customs or traditional meeting style, however in order to command respect for your ideas in the western meeting space, it is essential to learn how to not only express your opinion, but to also deliver it in an effective way.

 

そこで今回は、ビジネスシーンにおいて自分の意見を効果的に主張する方法についてお話ししましょう。

 自分の考えを相手にちゃんと伝えるためのポイントは、以下の５つです。

- 相手とのアイコンタクトを保つ

- 正しい姿勢（相手の方を向き、姿勢を正して座る／立つ）

-「オープン」な体勢（腕や足を組んで自分の身体をガードしない）

- 掌を開いておく（指差したりしない）

- 周りの意見に注意深く耳を傾ける

 

 Remember that the key points to giving your opinion effectively is to make sure you:

• - maintain eye contact
• - keep good posture (face the person and sit up or stand up straight)
• - open body language (don’t fold your arms or cross your legs)
• - use open palm gestures (don’t point)
• - listen attentively to other people’s opinions
•  

意見を述べるときには、よく使われる「I think」や「in my opinion」以外にもこのような表現が使えます。

 

I personally think / believe … （個人的にはこう思うのですが…）

From my point of view, … （私の見たところでは…）

In my case, … （私の場合、…）

 

自分の意見を強調したい場合や、相手が納得していないように見える場合には、次のようなフレーズを使ってみましょう。

 

I’m convinced that … （…だと確信しています）

Well, if I had to answer that, I would say … （どうしてもということであれば申し上げますが…）← 答えるのが難しい質問に対して使います

Not to beat around/about the bush, I think … （単刀直入に申しますと、…だと考えています）

 ※「beat around/about the bush」は「遠回しに言う」という意味のイディオムです。「around」はアメリカ英語、「about」はイギリス英語でよく使われます。

 

 

In addition to the traditionally used ‘I think’ and ‘in my opinion’, we can use the phrases below to give a standard opinion:

 

I personally think / believe …

From my point of view, …

In my case, ...

 

If you would like to give a stronger opinion and the person you are talking to you doesn’t look like they are convinced by what you have to say, we would use the following phrases:

 

I’m convinced that...

Well, if I had to answer that, I would say … (in response to a difficult question)

Not to beat about / around the bush, I think...

 *’beat about the bush’ (Br.E) / ‘beat around the bush’ (Am.E) is a common idiom which means ‘to be indirect’

 

議論を巻き起こしてしまうかもしれないけれど、どうしても主張したいことがある、という場合にはこのような表現が使えます。

 

Not everyone will agree with me, but ... （賛成されない方もいらっしゃるとは思いますが…）

You might not like what I have to say, but … （お気に召さないかもしれませんが）

We may not see eye-to-eye on this issue, but ... （私たちの意見は一致しないかもしれませんが）

 

When we would like to express our opinions really strongly and there is a risk of the meeting getting quite hot, we might use the following phrases:

 

Not everyone will agree with me, but ...

You might not like what I have to say, but ...

We may not see eye-to-eye on this issue, but ...

 

ではこれらのフレーズが実際に会話の中でどのように使われるか、例を見てみましょう。

 

• - Boss: So, Kenji. What do you think about hiring some temporary workers to help handle this project? （ケンジ、このプロジェクトのために派遣社員を雇うことについてどう思う？）
• - Kenji: From my point of view, I think it’s a great idea. We have a lot of tasks to do if we want to launch this product by the deadline so I personally believe hiring some more staff will help us meet our goals. （私の見たところ、良いアイディアだと思います。予定通りにプロジェクトを立ち上げるためのタスクは山ほどありますから。個人的には、目標達成のための人員増強はプラスになると思います。）
• - Boss: I see. How do you feel about this, Satoko? （なるほど。サトコはどう思う？）
• - Satoko: Well, not to beat about the bush but I think that the HR department doesn’t have the budget to cover the cost of hiring more workers. From my point of view, it’s a terrible idea. （そうですね。はっきり申し上げますと、人事部にそれだけの予算はないと思います。私の見たところ、決して良いアイディアではないように思われます。）
• - Kenji: We may not see eye-to-eye on this issue, but if we are going to get this product out on time, I’m convinced that hiring temporary staff is the only way to go. （意見が食い違うかもしれませんが、この製品を予定通りに揃えるには派遣社員を雇う以外に方法がないと私は確信しています。）
• - Satoko: You might not like what I have to say, but the HR department cannot authorise the kind of budget we need. Is it possible to get extra funding for this? （私の考えは意に沿わないかもしれませんが、人事部にはその予算を認める権限がないんです。追加資金を受けることは可能ですか？）
• - Boss: That’s possible. Let me get back to you on that ... （大丈夫だ。この件について後で連絡するよ。）

 

強い主張ができるようになるまでには時間がかかるかもしれませんが、ひるむことなくチャレンジしてみてください。そしてどのような意見もチームにとっては有益であるということを覚えておきましょう。あなたの考えをどんどん表現して伝えていきましょう！

 

Let’s look at these phrases in action:

• - Boss: So, Kenji. What do you think about hiring some temporary workers to help handle this project?

• - Boss: I see. How do you feel about this, Satoko?
